Our first workshop was about overcoming imposter syndrome. The session was really wholesome, and it was interesting to learn about the different types of imposter syndrome, as I didn’t realise there were so many.

We then had talks from copywriters, a content creator and graphic designer from It’s Nice That, which was an amazing insight into working in digital content! It’s Nice That seems like such a cool company doing interesting things within the creative sector (I was especially captivated by an article of theirs we used in the workshop task on how design has changed dating).

It was also useful to speak to two separate teams of theirs to see how the work of different roles interconnects. It was also great to hear about a variety of creative disciplines to get exposure to what kind of roles there are and consider what we might like to pursue after this course. They genuinely seem like they want to help when we ask questions at the end which is sweet and encouraging!

Lastly, we did a few workshops with Rosie and Chantal on different aspects of pre-production (creating a treatment, prepping for shooting), shooting (camera composition, lighting), and editing. The teachings about pre-production were useful for developing my idea for the brief we were given, and the filming task was really fun! I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would, as I usually don’t enjoy the filming aspect as much.

We got to work with the other people on our course and just had fun creating simple shots of each other, experimenting with lighting and whatever else we could find outside of the hub. It felt like play and brought the fun back into something I used to think was super complicated. I also loved working with my new friends on the course since everyone is really lovely, and it kick-started a conversation about helping each other with filming our videos (which we were all down to do)

I also really enjoyed the editing workshop as we got to play around and have fun there too. I think doing these tasks in a workshop setting with a time limit is helpful as it takes the pressure off and enables us to celebrate whatever we’ve created by just playing about yet staying focussed. All of this energy and momentum has helped me build confidence in creating my own video!
