Feeling creatively drained or stuck in a rut? Here are some practical tips to overcome creative burnout

02 September 2024

As a creative, there's a forever stream of new ideas and projects. But even the most passionate creatives can end up feeling drained, uninspired, and disconnected. This is what is called creative burnout, and it’s something many creatives face at some point in their careers. Even early in their journey.

If you’re struggling to stay motivated or feeling like your creative spark is running low, you’re not alone. Here are three ways to help you navigate through creative burnout and reignite your passion.

1. Know the Signs

The first step is recognising it - this could be exhaustion, a lack of enthusiasm for projects, or feeling stuck in a creative rut. It might also show up as procrastination, frustration, and other things.

2. Take a Break

Sometimes, the best way to get your creativity back is to step away from it for a while. Taking a break lets you rest and recharge. You'd be surprised how much disconnecting from work can do wonders for your mental and creative health.

Take some time to reconnect with your passion. Revisit old projects that made you happy and think about why you fell in love with your craft. Remember, it’s okay to prioritise your well-being over constant productivity.

3. Surround Yourself with Inspiration

Inspiration is everywhere. Surround yourself with things that inspire you. Visit galleries, attend workshops, or build your Pinterest board. Reach out to creative friends - sometimes, just talking to someone who understands your struggles can help lift you out of a creative slump.
