NON LINEAR

A pilot 13-week multi-disciplinary intensive training course to get you into creative careers.

NON LINEAR is a free full-time 13-week multi-disciplinary training course on all things Content Creation, Film & TV Production, Podcasting, Music, Art, and Design for young East Londoners aged 18-24 who want to kickstart their creative career.

We recognise that careers in the creative sector come in many shapes and forms. In response, NON LINEAR was created with a curriculum that embraces this and is designed to equip participants with the ability to think differently, turbocharge imagination, build resilience, and nurture confidence in their own abilities and unique skill sets.

You will learn an array of practical and technical skills, including a crash course in the editing software Premier Pro and an introduction to Maya (VFX), and put your creativity and problem-solving skills to the test working within real-world professional environments.

The course is taught by guest-speakers, all innovators of their craft, including Campbell Addy (Artist/ Photographer), Koby Adom (Director), Nikki Amuka-Bird (Actor), Carrie Cracknell (Director), Thomas Heatherwick (Designer), Marina Mansour (Content Creator), Vanessa Maria (DJ), Grayson Perry (Artist), Edem Wornoo (Writer/ Director) & more.

This pilot programme is a new collaboration between Creativity Works x NON LINEAR (created by Ekow Eshun, Paul Franklyn and Oliver Benjamin) and co-designed and co-delivered with Barking & Dagenham College. Participants can expect similar features to the well-loved Creativity Works course in this ultimate creativity Bootcamp made to initiate foundational skills and act as a catalyst to nurture a successful career in the creative industry.

  • Who's involved?

    NON LINEAR is created by Ekow Eshun, Paul Franklyn and Oliver Benjamin.

    Ekow is a writer and curator. He is Chairman of the Fourth Plinth, overseeing the foremost public art project in the UK, an award-winning broadcaster, and his writing has appeared in publications including the New York Times, Financial Times and The Guardian.

    Paul is the co-founder of Plinth. Plinth is a one-stop destination for contemporary art and culture offering essays and interviews alongside beautiful affordable objects created by world-renowned artists.

    Oliver is the Director of Employment & Skills at A New Direction. A New Direction is an award not-for-profit organisation generating opportunities for young Londoners to develop their creativity.

    The course curriculum is co-designed and co-delivered by Barking and Dagenham College and A New Direction, supported by University College London. The course is also supported by The Mayor’s Fund for London Creativity Works programme and The London Borough of Barking and Dagenham.

  • Who can apply?

    • Aged 18 – 24
    • Living in an East London borough: Barking and Dagenham, Hackney, Havering, Newham, Redbridge, Tower Hamlets, and Waltham Forest
    • Priority is given to those with a lived connection to the London Borough of Barking & Dagenham (i.e. living in, studying in, went to school in)
    • Available for the full duration of the course between 18 September – 15 December 2023 (full time, Mon-Fri), including attending all timetabled sessions taking place at Barking & Dagenham College's Rush Green Campus, RM7 0XU
